Fairway Medical Sleep Diagnostics Center

According to a study by the Institute of Medicine, some 50 to 70 million Americans chronically suffer from sleep disorders; and some 80%-90% of adults with clinically significant problems remain undiagnosed. The cumulative effect of this can be devastating, and have been associated with an increased risk of hypertension, diabetes, obesity, depression, heart attack and stroke. In addition, almost 20% of all serious car crash injuries are associated with driver sleepiness, independent of alcohol effects.

Right now, there are only a handful of facilities in the nation with the diagnostic and therapeutic technologies necessary to address this unmet need. Fairway Medical is proud to join their ranks with our new Sleep Diagnostics Center. Along with luxuries such as a plush, comfortable bed, private bathroom and a complimentary breakfast in an upscale hotel-like setting comes specialized medical expertise in diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of sleep disorders. In fact, an overnight study is necessary to diagnose the most common sleep disorder—sleep apnea.

People with sleep apnea literally stop breathing repeatedly during their sleep which causes them to wake up. While this arousal only lasts a few seconds, it typically happens somewhere between 10 and 60 times a night, which prevents the person from reaching the deep stages of slumber, such as rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, which the body needs in order to rest and replenish its strength.

There are several different types and causes of sleep apnea, not to mention other conditions such as periodic limb movements, a rhythmic jerking of your legs and feet that can only be diagnosed overnight. Take the sleep quiz to see if you need to schedule a consultation. Call (985) 801-3001 for an appointment.
